Preserving Habitat in the Northeast
As the Northeast program grows, we’ll be looking for tracts of land worthy of being held in conservation, either by granted easements or purchase.
The N.C. Coastal Federation already holds conservation easements on two large parcels along on the Scuppernong River, plus a parcel just off the river. These properties have extensive stands of pine and mixed hardwood bottomland forest, plus scattered cypress and Atlantic white cedar. One property is adjacent to state-owned land where a public park is planned. Our hope is to establish a corridor of protected land along the river and elsewhere in Tyrrell County to safeguard water quality, while keeping intact all the components of a healthy natural system.
In Currituck County, federation staff worked with the N.C. Coastal Land Trust and a local group in 2006 and 2007 to identify large parcels that might be placed in conservation specifically to protect water quality. The local group developed a list of criteria for ranking the land’s value to water quality protection. A GIS analysis pinpointed key parcels. Staffs from the federation and the Coastal Land Trust continue to talk with owners of those parcels.
Other property owners in Currituck and the northeast counties are encouraged to contact us if they would like information about land preservation options.
