Small Fish Kill in Craven Seems Localized

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Lower Neuse River Keeper Larry Baldwin said Wednesday that a small fish kill off of Carolina Pines appeared to be a localized incident. “It doesn’t seem to be anything huge. If anything it looks like a very localized low dissolved oxygen situation,” Baldwin said.

Earlier in the day, a local crabber reported dead fish floating off the development on the south shore of the Neuse River. “We’re probably talking about a couple hundred at the most. There are some seagulls laying offshore. That can be an indicator that there are some fish offshore,” Baldwin said.

This is the time of year when conditions most typically come together to create fish kills.

Or is it? After meeting 21 times, spending $80,000 in taxpayer money and getting three extensions from the General Assembly to keep working, the final recommendations by the panel this spring certainly will be ripe for scrutiny by both supporters and skeptics of the idea that humans can reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
