Congress Approves $22.5 Million for Southeast N.C. Beaches, Inlets

Nearly $22.5 million in federal funds have been secured for the southeastern beaches, inlets, the Intracoastal Waterway and the   Wilmington Port, including $300,000 for Surf City/Topsail Beach and $4.7 million for the Intracoastal Waterway.

Carteret Seeks Sand for Emerald Isle Beach

Carteret County Beach Commission Monday approved a maximum $24,900 contract with Raleigh engineering firm Moffatt and Nichol that pays for the company to work on a permit modification to allow the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) to place beach-quality sand dredged from the harbor project on the 1.4-mile stretch of beach in Emerald Isle instead of dumping the sand offshore.

Citizens Committee Urges Topsail to Pump Sand on Beaches

A citizens’ roundtable committee in Topsail Beach is sending town commissioners a recommendation that looks very similar to the plan that had already been put in place by the former board of commissioners. The committee is urging the town to re-nourish its beaches by January 2011. Topsail Voice

Topsail Beach Residents Want Sand

After two roundtables showed overwhelming support for a beach nourishment project, Topsail Beach is moving forward with an alternative sand source, though easements are still needed. The board voted unanimously at a special meeting Monday to go ahead with an alternative beach nourishment project, using sand from spoil islands and the Intracoastal Waterway instead of sand from borrow sites in the ocean.
