The North Carolina Coastal Federation will host its second annual Seafood Shellebration Oct. 24, 2015 from 5-8 p.m. in Raleigh at “The Green” behind Seaboard Station. Guests can join the federation in “shellebrating” the opening of the oyster season and our bountiful coast with live music, beer from Natty Greene’s Brewing and delicious seafood.
This year’s event will feature steamed oysters, even more flounder and clam chowder, and the addition of peel and eat shrimp! The Shellebration will be under the big tent on The Green behind Seaboard Station, centrally located inside the beltline with great views of downtown Raleigh. Guests can buy tickets for several local raffle items while enjoying live music from the coast with Always Right, an Americana band out of Beaufort, N.C.
The Seafood Shellebration is an annual fundraiser for the federation, and supports the coastal habitat restoration program. In 2014, with help from more than 900 volunteers, the federation stabilized eroding shorelines and created valuable estuarine habitat with oyster bag sills and wetland plantings coast wide – using over 3,000 bushels of oyster shell and planting over 700 feet of living shoreline. These oyster and wetland habitats are important for stabilizing eroding shorelines and improving water quality, and they also provide habitat for other species such as shrimp, blue crabs, flounder, drum, and many more. The Seafood Shellebration brings this effort full circle- celebrating the amazing productivity of our coastal habitats with delicious seafood, while providing oyster shell for future oyster reefs and funding for the restoration program.
Tickets are $35 per person for members ($40 for nonmembers) through Oct. 18, and $40 per person for members ($45 for nonmembers) starting Oct. 19. Last year’s Shellebration sold out, so don’t wait to buy tickets at the door!
Special thanks go to our lead sponsors Gypsy Divers, Charles Meeker and Anne McLaurin, Restoration Systems, Natty Greene’s Brewing, and our host Tyler’s Taproom!
