Southeast Coastal Ambassador Meeting
August 19 @ 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm
The Southeast Coastal Ambassadors will gather this month for an update on the NC’s Catch the King Tide project. Catch the King (CTK) is an annual tide mapping event that recruits volunteers to collect flooding data during the highest tides of the year, known as Perigean king tides. The event is led by Wetlands Watch, an organization that focuses on community flood resilience and climate adaptation. In 2023, Wetlands Watch expanded CTK to North Carolina with funding from NOAA’s Climate Program Office and in collaboration with the NC King Tides Project.
The data produced from this community science project can help us visualize how “normal” high tides could look in the future due to sea-level rise. From these images, we can create a record of how our shoreline looks today and track future changes. By visualizing these higher tide events, we can start to understand how rising sea levels will impact local resources, community investments, and our estuarine systems.
Following our meeting, participants will have the option to meet at Johnnie Mercer’s Fishing Pier at 7:45 pm for a shoreline cleanup and a live demonstration on how to track the king tide.
