The Coastal Federation’s half-acre demonstration oyster lease in Broad Creek near their Wanchese office is a vital resource for educating the public about oyster farming. Aligned with the State’s Strategic Mariculture Plan’s goal of expanding the oyster farming industry to a $100 million enterprise by 2030, the lease showcases various farming techniques.

In 2021, the oyster farming industry reached $27 million in value. Notably, since 2017, oyster harvest from farms has surpassed wild harvest. In 2021, farms yielded 3.5 times more oysters than wild harvesting (data from the NC Division of Marine Fisheries).

The lease features various oyster gear, including floating bags, cages, OysterGro ProFlo, and hex cages. Home to approximately 4,000 oysters, the lease serves as a learning ground for volunteers who assist operator Victoria Blakey with farm maintenance.

Victoria diligently monitors the lease, visiting weekly to inspect the gear, make repairs, and clean the oysters. She closely checks for any damage resulting from wear and tear or severe weather events.

The demonstration oyster lease is a key stop on the NC Oyster Trail, launched in 2020. For program updates, visit the Federation’s events calendar. To arrange a visit, contact the Wanchese office at neregion@nccoast.org
